The Online Round Tables (#ORT09) are back for the third time! This time around we are hosting a series of open discussions which will lead to the upcoming EduCamp Event in Graz, Austria (November, 6-7).

The third online event is already on Thursday October 29. Mark A.M. Kramer and Sam Easterby-Smith will be our guest speakers. They will guide us through an informal discussion around ‘mobile Learning’, a topic that will certainly generate a lively debate. Make sure to contribute to it too. Mark A.M. Kramer is an early adopter and informed critic of mobile information and communications technologies. Currently, Mark is teaching courses at the University of Applied Sciences, Upper Austria, within the Mobile Computing Department in Hagenberg and the Management School in Steyr, Austria. Mark also acts as a consultant for Mobilizy GmbH, an
Austrian software company that specializes in location-based services and augmented reality experiences.
Mark spends a great portion of his time between Vienna and Salzburg traveling on average 16-24 hours a week on the Austrian Railway. This time is spent in part by conducting real-world research and developing strategies for extreme-mobile learning scenarios. Mark is conducting his doctoral research within the general field of e-learning, concentrating on applying mobile technologies to enhance personal and cooperative learning
communities.
Mark’s long-term goal is to apply his medical background and anthropological field-experience to help develop mobile ICT solutions and infrastructure to assist medical & humanitarian staff located in geographically and politically (democratically) challenged regions.
Research Focus:
e-Learning, e-Literacy, e-Inclusion, ICT Enhanced Acquisition of Learning, e-Health, e-Government & e-Democracy, m-Learning.

Abstract:
The application of computer-generated imagery in live-video streams on mobile devices, as a way to expand the real-world, is finally available for the masses on an affordable basis. Augmented and mixed-reality scenarios are now a common fixture of our technology arsenal of methods to acquire information about our surroundings. This emergence of augmented reality (AR) also has great potential to support individual and group learning. I will share thoughts and experiences on how AR will change the way we view and experience learning in a situated context.

Among the available applications are many games and toys aimed at young children. Drawing on experiences (my own children aged 1 and 3) I will examine the way very young people approach these devices and their surprising levels of competency in navigating and operating them. I’ll also discuss the implications and opportunities for learning that mobile applications will doubtless bring to this new generation of digital natives.

Abstract: No country of old men
Despite the deep societal and economical changes induced by the media changes towards the Internet the impact on the future of learning remains unclear. Policy making like the Bologna process seems to have much more influence on agenda setting in the transformation of learning organizations
than technological innovations. Even in widely recognized debates like the adoption of learning management systems in learning institutions organizational change processes are far behind technological offers. Will also personal learning environments share the fate of the technology generations before them or can the adoption process in learning communities aligned with the development of learning services?

Abstract: OPEN CONTENT: NON-LEARNERS ANONYMOUS
More and more, people get frustrated by training and education that is overly formalized, expensive, stealing too much lifetime or simply not producing usable learning results. On the other hand, the Web is presenting a plethora of free and open content for many subjects and fields. And we have new stunningly powerful tools for collaboration and knowledge that cost nearly nothing. But still people are not able to take full advantage of these possibilities, feeling to be left on their own with the ambitious task of “self-learning”. I would like to share and discuss some thoughts from a working group thinking about how we could set up self-organizing groups, where “Non-learners Anonymous” can use Web 2.0 tools and practices to break with the painful habit of non-learning.
So how can we help creating self-organizing groups that can systematically take advantage of the “open content” in the web? What templates, tools and what rules should we arrange so that they can easily form, set up their project and their goals and then work collaboratively in a given time frame toward some tangible results.

Wir möchten die eigentlich schon traditionell gewordenen Online Round Tables im Vorfeld des EduCamps auch für das bevorstehende Event in Graz (6-7. November, Österreich) aufleben lassen. As we have grown used to, the Online Round tables, in preparation for the upcoming Educamp Event (November 6-7, in Austria), are back!

Vergangene Woche ging die durchschnittlich von mehr als 30 Teilnehmern besuchte ORT09-Reihe, die in Vorbereitung auf das bereits morgen startende EduCamp in Ilmenau stattfand, zu Ende. Zusammen mit dem EVOLVE-Netzwerk gelang es uns, in den Online-Seminaren namhafte Experten zu heiß diskutierten Themen im E-Learning zu gewinnen.

Leider hat uns in der letzten Session vergangen Montag dann doch noch die Technik ein Schnippchen geschlagen: zwar konnte sich Steve Wheeler in die Elluminate-Session einloggen, doch wir ihn leider nicht hören. Wahrscheinlich hat ihm die Firewall an seiner Uni einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht – wie passend. Hier berichtet er davon: Can anyone hear me? Die gute Nachricht: am Samstag, den 18. April auf dem EduCamp wird er die Session wiederholen. Live via Skype zugeschaltet wird er uns seine Gedanken zu Edupunk vorstellen (13:00 CEST).

ORT09 | Recordings & preview of the EduCamp

Last week ended the ORT09-series, which was organized in the run-up of the tomorrow beginning EduCamp in Ilmenau, with an average of 30 participants on each session. Together with the EVOLVE-Network we were able to invite well-known experts to discuss interesting e-learning topics in the online seminars.

Unfortunately, at the last session we had some problems with the technique, so Steve Wheeler could join the show, but we could not hear him. Probably the firewall of his university was the problem. Here he reports on that: Can anyone hear me? The good news: on Saturday, April 18 th at the EduCamp he will repeat his session. Live via Skype he will present his thoughts on Edupunk (12 BST).

Die vortragenden Experten

		Steve Wheeler – Seine Tätigkeiten drehen sich rund um das Thema E-Learning. Er ist nicht nur Dozent für Bildungs- & Informationstechnologie an der Universität Plymouth, sondern auch an der Faculty of Education für das “e-Learning research network” verantwortlich und unter anderem Mitglied des “Institue for Learning”. Vor allem den Forschungsbereichen E-Learning, Web 2.0 und Social Software widmet er sein Interesse (weitere Infos hier und in seinem Blog).
		Dr. Martin Ebner - Im Zuge seines Studiums der Bauingenieurwissenschaften an der Technischen Universität Graz promovierte er zum Thema “e-Learning im konstruktiven Ingenieurbau”. Seit 2006 leitet er die Abteilung “Vernetztes Lernen” des Zentralen Informationsdienstes der TU Graz. Nebenbei forscht und lehrt Martin Ebner rund um die Themen E-Learning, M-Learning, Web 2.0 und führt auch seinen bekannten Weblog hierzu. Eine seiner letzten Veröffentlichungen trägt den passenden Titel “Edupunk – das kreative Chaos als Strategie?”.

The expert speakers

		Steve Wheeler – His activities revolve around the issue of e-learning. He is not only a lecturer in Education & Information Technology at the University of Plymouth, but also responsible for the “e-learning research network” at the Faculty of Education and a member of the Institute for Learning. Above all the research areas of e-learning, Web 2.0 and Social Software devotes his interest (further information here and in his blog).
		Dr. Martin Ebner - In the course of his studies of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Graz, he received his doctorate on the topic “e-learning in structural engineering”. Since 2006 he heads the department “Networked Learning” of the Central Information Service of the Technical University of Graz and is among others responsible in the area of e-learning. Martin Ebner researches and teaches around the topics e-learning, m-learning and Web 2.0 and also leads his famous weblog on this. One of his latest publication bears the appropriate title “Edupunk – creative chaos as a strategy?”.

		Timothy Hall - Bereits seit 25 Jahren an der Universität von Limerick tätig ist Timothy Hall einer der Mitbegründer und Direktor des Educational Media Research Centre kurz EMCR. Im Zuge dieser Tätigkeit hat er bereits an vielen nationalen sowie europäischen Projekten mitgearbeitet, die sich rund um das Thema E-Learning drehten.
		Dr. Willms Buhse - Als Gründer von doubleYUU, einem Beratungsunternehmen spezialisiert auf die Einführung von Prinzipien des Web 2.0 in Unternehmen, setzt er auf aktive Partizipation der Mitarbeiter und prägte das Leitmotiv „Schönheit kommt von Innen”. Bis Februar 2009 verantwortete Dr. Willms Buhse die Bereiche Marketing und Kommunikation bei CoreMedia. Seine letzte Veröffentlichung aus dem Jahr 2008 trägt den Titel “Enterprise 2.0 – Die Kunst, loszulassen” und enthält Fachbeitrage von namhaften internationalen Autoren.

Timothy Hall musste seine Teilnahme am morgigen ORT leider kurzfristig absagen. Seinen Platz wird Pat Parslow, wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Universität Reading (UK), einnehmen.

Pat Parslow works in OdinLab, researching social networking, virtual learning environments, virtual research environments, open learning, open learner models, open educational resources, concepts of the self and consciousness, Digital Identity, connectivism, networks, boundaries, abstraction and game based learning (amongst other things!) He returned to education after working in land survey, civil engineering and IT (as support, developer and manager). (Source)

The expert speakers

		Timothy Hall – Working in the University of Limerick for the past 25 years Timothy Hall is the co-founder and director of the Educational Media Research Centre short EMCR. In this position he worked on several national and European projects that have been concerned with eLearning.
		Dr. Willms Buhse – As the founder of doubleYUU, a consultancy specialized in the introduction of Web 2.0 principles in companies, he stands for active participation of employees and coined the motto “beauty comes from inside.” Until February 2009 Dr. Willms Buhse was responsible for marketing and communications at CoreMedia. His last publication from 2008 is named “Enterprise 2.0 – The art of letting go” and contains technical contributions by notable international authors.

Thematic focuses and discussion subjects:

• How will communication and collaboration change when digital natives are employed in senior positions?
• Changed knowledge management through chats, Twitter and so on?
• How and to what extent will blogs, wikis and so on promote the productivity and creativity of employees?
• Collaboration tools in the social web permit decentralized work. What is the workplace, what are the working places of the future?
• Where is the limit? How far can the boundaries of classic corporate structure in the sense of Enterprise 2.0 be driven?

Dieses Mal zwar “nur” von knapp 30 Teilnehmern besucht, aber trotzdem mindestens ebenso interessant wie der erste, fand gestern der zweite Online Round Table zum Thema “Karrierefalle Internet. Welchen Einfluss hat das Web 2.0 auf unsere Online-Reputation und Identität?” statt. Wer es nicht geschafft hat, kann sich nun die einstündige Aufzeichnung anschauen, in der Mario Grobholz u.a. das Start-Up “myON-ID” genauer vorstellt.

This time with just 30 participants, but at least as interesting as the first, took place the second Online Round Table yesterday. This time on the topic “Careers and the Internet – how does Web 2.0 impact on our Online Reputation and Identity?”.
