Educamp GrazThe Online Round Tables (#ORT09) are back for the third time! This time around we are hosting a series of open discussions which will lead to the upcoming EduCamp Event in Graz, Austria (November, 6-7).

The third online event is already on Thursday October 29. Mark A.M. Kramer and Sam Easterby-Smith will be our guest speakers. They will guide us through an informal discussion around ‘mobile Learning’, a topic that will certainly generate a lively debate. Our Guest Speakers

Mark A. M. Kramer
Mark A.M. Kramer is an early adopter and informed critic of mobile information and communications technologies. Currently, Mark is teaching courses at the University of Applied Sciences, Upper Austria, within the Mobile Computing Department in Hagenberg and the Management School in Steyr, Austria. Mark also acts as a consultant for Mobilizy GmbH, an
Austrian software company that specializes in location-based services and augmented reality experiences.
Mark spends a great portion of his time between Vienna and Salzburg traveling on average 16-24 hours a week on the Austrian Railway. This time is spent in part by conducting real-world research and developing strategies for extreme-mobile learning scenarios. Mark is conducting his doctoral research within the general field of e-learning, concentrating on applying mobile technologies to enhance personal and cooperative learning
communities.
Mark’s long-term goal is to apply his medical background and anthropological field-experience to help develop mobile ICT solutions and infrastructure to assist medical & humanitarian staff located in geographically and politically (democratically) challenged regions.
Research Focus:
e-Learning, e-Literacy, e-Inclusion, ICT Enhanced Acquisition of Learning, e-Health, e-Government & e-Democracy, m-Learning.

Abstract:
The application of computer-generated imagery in live-video streams on mobile devices, as a way to expand the real-world, is finally available for the masses on an affordable basis. Augmented and mixed-reality scenarios are now a common fixture of our technology arsenal of methods to acquire information about our surroundings. This emergence of augmented reality (AR) also has great potential to support individual and group learning. I will share thoughts and experiences on how AR will change the way we view and experience learning in a situated context.


portraitSam Easterby-Smith has been writing code since the age of 4 and has worked extensively on educational software projects, games, databases, websites and the development of data exchange standards throughout his professional career. He currently runs Spotlight Kid Ltd, a consultancy based in Manchester, UK specialising in mobile applications on iPhone and other platforms for the education and entertainment sectors. Prior to setting up his consultancy business, Sam has worked for many years with CETIS at the University of Bolton.

Abstract:
Apple’s iPhone has shifted the goal posts for mobile devices, bringing truly usable computing and ubiquitous connectivity to the pockets of users and jangling coins to the pockets of Apple and independent software developers. A major key to the success of the device has been the combination of multi-touch screen and the software, both what comes in the box and the wealth of downloadable applications. Other manufacturers have taken note and are rapidly introducing their own platforms and App Stores to recoup some ground.

Among the available applications are many games and toys aimed at young children. Drawing on experiences (my own children aged 1 and 3) I will examine the way very young people approach these devices and their surprising levels of competency in navigating and operating them. I’ll also discuss the implications and opportunities for learning that mobile applications will doubtless bring to this new generation of digital natives.

Erik DuvalErik DuvalErik Duval is a professor at the computer science department of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Erik’s research focuses on management of and access to structured and unstructured data. In practical terms, we research repositories, federated search, harvesting, content management, but also more end user oriented aspects like information visualization, mobile information devices, multi-touch displays and mash-ups. His group typically applies research results to technology enhanced learning, access to music and ‘research2.0′. His current obsession is massive hyper-personalization (“The Snowflake Effect”) – a topic on which he regularly keynotes. Erik teaches courses on Human-Computer Interaction, Multimedia, problem solving and design. With the ARIADNE Foundation, he is quite active in the development of technical standards. He chairs the IEEE LTSC working group on Learning Object Metadata. Erik co-founded two spin-offs that apply research results for access to music and scientific output.
Abstract:
Learning is personal. So, learning environments should be personal too… Many (not all!) of our students do not expect anything less. Yet, organization-wide support for learning environments seems to be incompatible with personalization as witnessed by the one size fits all approach of dominant LMS’s. I will share some of my experiences in this domain: I once chaired the group that helped my university to decide to adopt Blackboard. That university wide system now has more than 90.000 users. Yet, my courses in it only contain a link to a wiki or a blog or a facebook group. In my talk, I will try to provide a happy twist to this ironic story…

Ralf KlammaRalf Klammais a senior researcher within the Information Systems group at RWTH Aachen University. He has visited the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge and has been a substitute professor at the universities of Chemnitz and Passau. He is technical coordinator of the EUIP ROLE (Responsive Open Learning Environments), member of the Aachen Excellence Cluster UMIC (Ultra-High Speed Information and Communication) and project manager for a number of EU and German funded projects. His research interests include web science, technology enhanced learning, and mobile data management.

Abstract: No country of old men
Despite the deep societal and economical changes induced by the media changes towards the Internet the impact on the future of learning remains unclear. Policy making like the Bologna process seems to have much more influence on agenda setting in the transformation of learning organizations
than technological innovations. Even in widely recognized debates like the adoption of learning management systems in learning institutions organizational change processes are far behind technological offers. Will also personal learning environments share the fate of the technology generations before them or can the adoption process in learning communities aligned with the development of learning services?

Martin WellerMartin Weller is Professor of Educational Technology at the Open University in the UK. He chaired the Open University’s first major elearning course with 15,000 students annually. He was the Project Director for the Open University Virtuel Learning Environment and more recently, SocialLearn the Open University social networking project. His interests are in digital scholarship, implications of new technologies for higher education, learning design and social networks. He blogs at edtechie.net
Abstract:
Martin will explore the ways in which the term ‘open’ has changed in usage over the years since the founding of the Open University, and consider what ‘open’ principles such a university would be founded on now. The practice of being an ‘open scholar’, and the benefits and issues involved will be examined.

Martin LindnerMartin Lindner is a researcher and consultant on the new growing Microweb. His work focuses strongly on Digital Knowledge Management, Learning in the Web and Building of Virtual Teams. He sees himself as a Digital Immigrant and Media Researcher, with a PhD in Literature.

Abstract: OPEN CONTENT: NON-LEARNERS ANONYMOUS
More and more, people get frustrated by training and education that is overly formalized, expensive, stealing too much lifetime or simply not producing usable learning results. On the other hand, the Web is presenting a plethora of free and open content for many subjects and fields. And we have new stunningly powerful tools for collaboration and knowledge that cost nearly nothing. But still people are not able to take full advantage of these possibilities, feeling to be left on their own with the ambitious task of “self-learning”. I would like to share and discuss some thoughts from a working group thinking about how we could set up self-organizing groups, where “Non-learners Anonymous” can use Web 2.0 tools and practices to break with the painful habit of non-learning.
So how can we help creating self-organizing groups that can systematically take advantage of the “open content” in the web? What templates, tools and what rules should we arrange so that they can easily form, set up their project and their goals and then work collaboratively in a given time frame toward some tangible results.

Online Round Table 2009 im Vorfeld des EduCamp Graz (Kooperation mit dem EVOLVE-Netzwerk)

Wir möchten die eigentlich schon traditionell gewordenen Online Round Tables im Vorfeld des EduCamps auch für das bevorstehende Event in Graz (6-7. November, Österreich) aufleben lassen. Ähnlich zu den bisherigen Veranstaltungen (Link) ist es uns mit Unterstützung von Graham Attwell und Cristina Costa gelungen, mittels des EVOLVE-Netzwerks (gefördert duch JISC) drei weitere Sessions durchführen zu können. Zusammen mit Martin Ebner werden sie die Online Round Table abhalten.

Bis zum Hauptevent im November in Graz (EduCamp Graz) sind an folgenden Tagen, folgende Themen vorgesehen:

Alle Round Tables werden in englischer Sprache durchgeführt und sind geöffnet für ein weltweites Publikum. Es wird die Video-Konferenz-Software Elluminate verwendet werden (Hier gibt es ein Tutorial). Es werden alle Round Tables im Anschluss als Aufzeichung zur Verfügung gestellt.

Genaue Informationen zu jedem einzelenen Ereignis gibt es dann spätestens ein Woche vor dem eigentlichen Event und werden auch in Facebook (Evolve-Network) bekannt gegeben.

As we have grown used to, the Online Round tables, in preparation for the upcoming Educamp Event (November 6-7, in Austria), are back!

Once again, the online sessions will be supported by the JISC sponsored EVOLVE Community. Graham Attwell and Cristina Costa, two of the co-founders of EVOLVE, will co-moderate the online events. Together with Martin Ebner they will organise these events. Three sessions will be offered prior to the face to face event in Graz, Austria.

ORT09 | Aufzeichnungen & Ausblick auf EduCamp

Vergangene Woche ging die durchschnittlich von mehr als 30 Teilnehmern besuchte ORT09-Reihe, die in Vorbereitung auf das bereits morgen startende EduCamp in Ilmenau stattfand, zu Ende. Zusammen mit dem EVOLVE-Netzwerk gelang es uns, in den Online-Seminaren namhafte Experten zu heiß diskutierten Themen im E-Learning zu gewinnen.

Leider hat uns in der letzten Session vergangen Montag dann doch noch die Technik ein Schnippchen geschlagen: zwar konnte sich Steve Wheeler in die Elluminate-Session einloggen, doch wir ihn leider nicht hören. Wahrscheinlich hat ihm die Firewall an seiner Uni einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht – wie passend. Hier berichtet er davon: Can anyone hear me? Die gute Nachricht: am Samstag, den 18. April auf dem EduCamp wird er die Session wiederholen. Live via Skype zugeschaltet wird er uns seine Gedanken zu Edupunk vorstellen (13:00 CEST).

Nachdem der  dritte Online Round Table zum Thema “Enterprise 2.0 – Die Potenziale von Social Software für die Lernprozesse in Unternehmen” mit Dr. Willms Buhse und Pat Parslow wieder rund 30 Interessierte anlockte (hier gelangt man zur Aufzeichnung), geht der ORT09 nächsten Montag in seine letzte Runde, bevor die Themen der vergangen drei Monate auf dem EduCamp Mitte April in Ilmenau intensiv weiter diskutiert werden können.

Die vortragenden Experten

stevewheeler1 Steve Wheeler – Seine Tätigkeiten drehen sich rund um das Thema E-Learning. Er ist nicht nur Dozent für Bildungs- & Informationstechnologie an der Universität Plymouth, sondern auch an der Faculty of Education für das “e-Learning research network” verantwortlich und unter anderem Mitglied des “Institue for Learning”. Vor allem den Forschungsbereichen E-Learning, Web 2.0 und Social Software widmet er sein Interesse (weitere Infos hier und in seinem Blog).
martinebner Dr. Martin Ebner - Im Zuge seines Studiums der Bauingenieurwissenschaften an der Technischen Universität Graz promovierte er zum Thema “e-Learning im konstruktiven Ingenieurbau”. Seit 2006 leitet er die Abteilung “Vernetztes Lernen” des Zentralen Informationsdienstes der TU Graz. Nebenbei forscht und lehrt Martin Ebner rund um die Themen E-Learning, M-Learning, Web 2.0 und führt auch seinen bekannten Weblog hierzu. Eine seiner letzten Veröffentlichungen trägt den passenden Titel “Edupunk – das kreative Chaos als Strategie?”.

timhall Timothy Hall - Bereits seit 25 Jahren an der Universität von Limerick tätig ist Timothy Hall einer der Mitbegründer und Direktor des Educational Media Research Centre kurz EMCR. Im Zuge dieser Tätigkeit hat er bereits an vielen nationalen sowie europäischen Projekten mitgearbeitet, die sich rund um das Thema E-Learning drehten.
wbuhse Dr. Willms Buhse - Als Gründer von doubleYUU, einem Beratungsunternehmen spezialisiert auf die Einführung von Prinzipien des Web 2.0 in Unternehmen, setzt er auf aktive Partizipation der Mitarbeiter und prägte das Leitmotiv „Schönheit kommt von Innen”. Bis Februar 2009 verantwortete Dr. Willms Buhse die Bereiche Marketing und Kommunikation bei CoreMedia. Seine letzte Veröffentlichung aus dem Jahr 2008 trägt den Titel “Enterprise 2.0 – Die Kunst, loszulassen” und enthält Fachbeitrage von namhaften internationalen Autoren.

Die “Online Round Table 2009″ sind ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt des EduCamp- und des EVOLVE-Netzwerks (gefördert durch JISC). Sie verstehen sich als Pre-Events zum dritten deutschen EduCamp vom 17. bis 19. April 2009 in Ilmenau.

Update 2009-03-15

Timothy Hall musste seine Teilnahme am morgigen ORT leider kurzfristig absagen. Seinen Platz wird Pat Parslow, wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Universität Reading (UK), einnehmen.

Pat Parslow works in OdinLab, researching social networking, virtual learning environments, virtual research environments, open learning, open learner models, open educational resources, concepts of the self and consciousness, Digital Identity, connectivism, networks, boundaries, abstraction and game based learning (amongst other things!) He returned to education after working in land survey, civil engineering and IT (as support, developer and manager). (Source)

ORT09 | Session #2 – Aufzeichnung

Dieses Mal zwar “nur” von knapp 30 Teilnehmern besucht, aber trotzdem mindestens ebenso interessant wie der erste, fand gestern der zweite Online Round Table zum Thema “Karrierefalle Internet. Welchen Einfluss hat das Web 2.0 auf unsere Online-Reputation und Identität?” statt. Wer es nicht geschafft hat, kann sich nun die einstündige Aufzeichnung anschauen, in der Mario Grobholz u.a. das Start-Up “myON-ID” genauer vorstellt.

Hier geht es zur Elluminate-Aufzeichnung.

Im Mixxt-Forum des EduCamps darf auch zum Thema weiter diskutiert werden, aber natürlich gerne auch hier direkt als Kommentar.

Der nächste ORT findet am 16. März statt 19:00 CET zum Thema “Enterprise 2.0 – Die Potenziale von Social Software für die Lernprozesse in Unternehmen” statt. Als Experten dürfen wir beim dritten ORT Timothy Hall von der University of Limerick, Ireland und Willms Buhse, der für Marketing und Kommunikation bei CoreMedia verantwortlich ist, begrüßen.
