Wer sind die EduCamper?

In den letzten Tagen ist die Diskussion um ein eigenes Selbstverständnis der EduCamper/-innen wieder neu entbrannt. Ausgehend von Lisa Rosas Statement zur Podiumsrunde in Hamburg, indem sie auch das Selbstverständnis erwähnt, wird im Mixxt-Forum derzeit diskutiert, ob es überhaupt sinnvoll ist, ein solches Selbstverständnis zu haben.

Um die Meinung möglichst vieler EduCamp-Begeisterter dazu einzuholen, haben wir eine kleine Umfrage aufgesetzt, um das gesamte Stimmungsbild in Erfahrung zu bringen – also sagt uns Eure Meinung!

Fühlt Euch frei auch in den Kommentaren kurze Begründungen für Eure Auswahl zu geben oder im Forum fleißig mitzudiskutieren.

200 angemeldete Teilnehmer

Während die Vorbereitungen für das Hamburger EduCamp laufen werfen wir einen Blick auf die Anmeldezahlen. Genau drei Wochen vor Veranstaltungsbeginn des EduCamps in Hamburg sind 200 verfügbare Plätze gebucht. Das gibt Energie für die Organisatoren, klärt den Sinn für die Sponsoren (weitere dürfen sich gerne melden) und weckt Erwartungen auf einen sehr interessanten Austausch mit einem vielfältigen Teilnehmerkreis. Die nächsten Wochen und Tage werden wir nutzen um über weitere Details zu informieren.

Bei Twitter (#ec10hh) kann man die Reisevorbereitungen der Teilnehmer mitverfolgen und kleine Informationshäppchen aufschnappen. Im Forum werden aktuell 13 Themenvorschläge und -wünsche diskutiert. Es ist quasi spürbar wie der Termin näher rückt. Vorschläge für Unterkünfte, Verabredungen zur gemeinsamen Anreise und Mitfahrgelegenheiten können ebenfalls im Forum ausgetauscht werden.

Ich will auch zum EduCamp kommen, aber die Teilnehmerliste ist voll!

Keine Sorge, wir raten sich einfach weiterhin anzumelden. Meistens gibt es selbst wenige Tage vor der Veranstaltung noch etwas Bewegung im Teilnehmerfeld. Wer auf der Warteliste steht rutscht ggf. noch auf die Teilnehmerliste und kann am EduCamp teilnehmen. Deshalb lohnt es sich auf jeden Fall die Anmeldung (für beide Tage) vorzunehmen, auch wenn man zunächst auf der Warteliste landet.

EduCamp 2010 in Hamburg

Der Countdown für das nächste EduCamp läuft! Am 5. & 6. Februar 2010 wird es an der Universität Hamburg, Fakultät für Erziehungswissenschaft, Psychologie und Bewegungswissenschaft wieder einen Raum geben für gemeinsames Nachdenken, Arbeiten, Entwerfen, in Frage stellen, Ausprobieren… rund um das Thema Medien & Bildung. Die Anmeldung läuft, es sind schon zahlreiche Anmeldungen zu verzeichnen. Aufgrund der großen Nachfrage planen wir gerade, die Teilnehmerzahl zu erhöhen – meldet Euch also gerne weiter an und setzt Euch auf die Warteliste.

Wir möchten explizit auch Interessierte zur Teilnahme einladen, die sich bisher vielleicht (noch) nicht so intensiv mit dem Thema Medien & Bildung bzw. mit Bildung und Lernen im Web 2.0 auseinander gesetzt haben. Wir freuen uns daher über Themenvorschläge und Sessions zu Fragen der Mediendidaktik, Web 2.0, Lernen – Bildung – Wissenschaft im Netz, Workshops zum Einsatz digitaler Werkzeuge in Lehr- und Lernprozessen etc. aber auch über Ideen, die sich mit eher klassischen Fragen des Lehrens und Lernens auseinandersetzen, auch jenseits von Wikis, Blogs, Twitter & Co.

Als Ergänzung zur Auseinandersetzung mit den diversen Fragestellungen in den Sessions möchten wir ein für uns sehr zentrales Thema in einer offen gestalteten Podiumsdiskussion zur Sprache bringen: Vier Vertreter und Vertreterinnen unterschiedlicher Positionen diskutieren untereinander und gemeinsam mit den Teilnehmern und Teilnehmerinnen des EduCamps zu der Frage “Das Internet – ein Bildungsraum?” Wir möchten im Rahmen der Diskussionsrunde unterschiedliche und auch kontroverse Sichtweisen und Meinungen hinsichtlich der Bedeutung des Netzes für Bildungsprozesse zur Sprache bringen. Wir hoffen, damit viele interessante Anregungen und Denkanstöße für die Arbeit in den Sessions und natürlich auch für die Diskussionen “zwischendurch” zu erhalten.

Herzlichen Dank aus Graz!

Das erste österreichische (vierte deutschsprachige) EduCamp ist vorüber. Wir als Organisatoren möchten uns an dieser Stelle ganz herzlich bei allen Beteiligten bedanken; für die tolle Zusammenarbeit mit Marcel und Thomas, allen Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern von tertiären Bildungseinrichtungen in Graz, sowie den Sponsoren und allen, die aus Fern und Nah zum EduCamp nach Graz gekommen sind. Auch wenn das Format des Camps noch wenig bekannt und etabliert ist in Österreich, freuen wir uns, auf ein bunt zusammengesetztes Besucherspektrum verweisen zu können, entgegen der typisch österreichische “Schau ma mal”-Mentalität. Die Themen der Sessions waren sehr zukunftsorientiert ausgerichtet. Mit der Bildungscouch durften wir ein neues gestalterisches Element zum erstenmal ausprobieren. Die live Übertragungen aus allen Sessions war ein weiteres Novum, ebenso wie der Besuch der Monsters (Monster Academy) bei einem EduCamp.

Als medialen Abschluss wird es noch einen kurzen Film über das vergangene EduCamp in Graz geben. Sobald dieser fertig ist, wird er unter anderem an dieser Stelle präsentiert.

Das Organisationsteam Graz hofft, dass Graz in guter Erinnerung bleibt und wünscht allen CamperInnen noch viele weitere erfolgreiche EduCamps!

Online Round Table / Session #3 – mLearning

The Online Round Tables (#ORT09) are back for the third time! This time around we are hosting a series of open discussions which will lead to the upcoming EduCamp Event in Graz, Austria (November, 6-7).

The third online event is already on Thursday October 29. Mark A.M. Kramer and Sam Easterby-Smith will be our guest speakers. They will guide us through an informal discussion around ‘mobile Learning’, a topic that will certainly generate a lively debate. Make sure to contribute to it too. Mark A.M. Kramer is an early adopter and informed critic of mobile information and communications technologies. Currently, Mark is teaching courses at the University of Applied Sciences, Upper Austria, within the Mobile Computing Department in Hagenberg and the Management School in Steyr, Austria. Mark also acts as a consultant for Mobilizy GmbH, an
Austrian software company that specializes in location-based services and augmented reality experiences.
Mark spends a great portion of his time between Vienna and Salzburg traveling on average 16-24 hours a week on the Austrian Railway. This time is spent in part by conducting real-world research and developing strategies for extreme-mobile learning scenarios. Mark is conducting his doctoral research within the general field of e-learning, concentrating on applying mobile technologies to enhance personal and cooperative learning
communities.
Mark’s long-term goal is to apply his medical background and anthropological field-experience to help develop mobile ICT solutions and infrastructure to assist medical & humanitarian staff located in geographically and politically (democratically) challenged regions.
Research Focus:
e-Learning, e-Literacy, e-Inclusion, ICT Enhanced Acquisition of Learning, e-Health, e-Government & e-Democracy, m-Learning.

Abstract:
The application of computer-generated imagery in live-video streams on mobile devices, as a way to expand the real-world, is finally available for the masses on an affordable basis. Augmented and mixed-reality scenarios are now a common fixture of our technology arsenal of methods to acquire information about our surroundings. This emergence of augmented reality (AR) also has great potential to support individual and group learning. I will share thoughts and experiences on how AR will change the way we view and experience learning in a situated context.

Sam Easterby-Smith has been writing code since the age of 4 and has worked extensively on educational software projects, games, databases, websites and the development of data exchange standards throughout his professional career. He currently runs Spotlight Kid Ltd, a consultancy based in Manchester, UK specialising in mobile applications on iPhone and other platforms for the education and entertainment sectors. Prior to setting up his consultancy business, Sam has worked for many years with CETIS at the University of Bolton.

Abstract:
Apple’s iPhone has shifted the goal posts for mobile devices, bringing truly usable computing and ubiquitous connectivity to the pockets of users and jangling coins to the pockets of Apple and independent software developers. A major key to the success of the device has been the combination of multi-touch screen and the software, both what comes in the box and the wealth of downloadable applications. Other manufacturers have taken note and are rapidly introducing their own platforms and App Stores to recoup some ground.

Among the available applications are many games and toys aimed at young children. Drawing on experiences (my own children aged 1 and 3) I will examine the way very young people approach these devices and their surprising levels of competency in navigating and operating them. I’ll also discuss the implications and opportunities for learning that mobile applications will doubtless bring to this new generation of digital natives.

Umfrage Kinderbetreuung beim EduCamp Hamburg 2010

In Vorbereitung auf das übernächste EduCamp am 5.+6.Februar 2010 in Hamburg haben wir heute über das Thema Kinderbetreuung gesprochen. Wir haben uns gefragt ob es überhaupt einen Bedarf an Kinderbetreuung gäbe und für welche Altersgruppen bedarf bestünde. Hierüber lässt sich viel spekulieren, aber das Beste wird sein wir fragen die potenziellen Nutzer der EduCamp Kinderbetreuung. Deshalb haben wir eine kleine Umfrage eingerichtet die uns Klarheit geben soll, ob wir in diesen Bereich Ressourcen investieren sollen, damit es möglicherweise eine Kinderbetreuung gibt.

EduCamp-Selbstverständnis und Blog-Carnival

Seit Anfang dieser Woche steht unsere vorläufige Endversion des EduCamp-Selbstverständnis. Es kann natürlich im Forum weiter diskutiert werden, in dem bereits wieder eine kleine Diskussion entstanden ist

Das Selbstverständnis kann sicher außerdem einen wertvollen Beitrag für den aktuellen Blog-Carnival WissensWert mit dem Thema “Sind Edu- oder BarCamps nur eine Modeerscheinung?” darstellen, in dem das EduCamp als mögliche neue Konferenzform diskutiert werden soll. Auch hier sollte es unbedingt ein paar Meinungen aus der Community geben!

Erik DuvalErik Duval is a professor at the computer science department of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Erik’s research focuses on management of and access to structured and unstructured data. In practical terms, we research repositories, federated search, harvesting, content management, but also more end user oriented aspects like information visualization, mobile information devices, multi-touch displays and mash-ups. His group typically applies research results to technology enhanced learning, access to music and ‘research2.0′. His current obsession is massive hyper-personalization (“The Snowflake Effect”) – a topic on which he regularly keynotes. Erik teaches courses on Human-Computer Interaction, Multimedia, problem solving and design. With the ARIADNE Foundation, he is quite active in the development of technical standards. He chairs the IEEE LTSC working group on Learning Object Metadata. Erik co-founded two spin-offs that apply research results for access to music and scientific output.
Abstract:
Learning is personal. So, learning environments should be personal too… Many (not all!) of our students do not expect anything less. Yet, organization-wide support for learning environments seems to be incompatible with personalization as witnessed by the one size fits all approach of dominant LMS’s. I will share some of my experiences in this domain: I once chaired the group that helped my university to decide to adopt Blackboard. That university wide system now has more than 90.000 users. Yet, my courses in it only contain a link to a wiki or a blog or a facebook group. In my talk, I will try to provide a happy twist to this ironic story…

Ralf Klammais a senior researcher within the Information Systems group at RWTH Aachen University. He has visited the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge and has been a substitute professor at the universities of Chemnitz and Passau. He is technical coordinator of the EUIP ROLE (Responsive Open Learning Environments), member of the Aachen Excellence Cluster UMIC (Ultra-High Speed Information and Communication) and project manager for a number of EU and German funded projects. His research interests include web science, technology enhanced learning, and mobile data management.

Abstract: No country of old men
Despite the deep societal and economical changes induced by the media changes towards the Internet the impact on the future of learning remains unclear. Policy making like the Bologna process seems to have much more influence on agenda setting in the transformation of learning organizations
than technological innovations. Even in widely recognized debates like the adoption of learning management systems in learning institutions organizational change processes are far behind technological offers. Will also personal learning environments share the fate of the technology generations before them or can the adoption process in learning communities aligned with the development of learning services?
